2016–2027 Ford Expedition FAQ

What driving conditions require severe-service maintenance?

2023–2027

Short trips under 5-10 mi (8-16 km), extreme temperatures, dusty conditions, extended idling, heavy loads, or towing require the severe-service items in the maintenance chart.

How does the vehicle tell me when an oil change is due?

2023–2027

The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor uses vehicle use to set oil-change timing and shows a message; however, service intervals must not exceed one year or 10,000 mi (16,000 km).

Why must the cabin air filter remain installed?

2023–2027

Keep a filter installed to prevent foreign objects from entering the system; without one, degradation or damage could result, while aftermarket filters may reduce filtration and climate-control performance.

Page 138 in the 2027 manual →

2018–2021

The cabin air filter traps dust, pollen, and other particles, and is located behind the glove box.

Page 159 in the 2021 manual →

What does the cabin air filter do?

2023–2027

The cabin air filter improves interior air quality by trapping dust, pollen, and other particles.

How do I sound and stop the panic alarm?

2023–2027

Press the panic button to sound the alarm, then press it again or switch the ignition on to stop it; it operates only with the ignition off.

What should I do if I lose my key or remote control?

2023–2027

Purchase a replacement key or remote control from an authorized dealer, who can program remote controls for your vehicle.

How should I have the automatic transmission fluid serviced?

2023–2027

Have an authorized dealer service it because specialized equipment and procedures are required to set the correct fluid level; capacity is not listed.

Use transmission fluid meeting specification WSS-M2C949-A for proper system operation.

Page 202 in the 2027 manual →

2018–2021

The automatic transmission has no fluid dipstick, so have an authorized dealer check or change the fluid at the correct service interval.

Page 346 in the 2021 manual →

2016–2017

Do not substitute another fluid: the automatic transmission requires MERCON LV, and using any other fluid may cause transmission damage.

What does distance to empty mean?

2023–2027

Distance to empty estimates how far you can travel on the fuel remaining; driving-pattern changes can make it decrease, increase, or stay constant.

Page 126 in the 2027 manual →

2016–2017

From the main menu, select Display Mode, then use the arrow buttons to choose Distance to Empty.

What does the rear seatbelt warning display mean?

2018–2021

It means a rear occupant unfastened the seatbelt or it became unfastened; no warning appears if the seat is empty or was never buckled.

When should I change the engine oil?

2018–2021

When the oil-change message appears, change the oil within two weeks or 500 mi (800 km), then reset the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor.

If the display resets prematurely or fails, change the oil every six months or 5,000 mi (8,000 km), never exceeding one year or 10,000 mi (16,000 km).

How do I replace the battery in my integrated keyhead transmitter?

2016–2017

  1. For an integrated keyhead transmitter, use a thin coin to open the cover, remove the gasket if needed, and take out the old battery.
  2. Install a CR2032 or equivalent three-volt lithium battery with the positive side up, press it fully into place, and refit the cover.
  3. Do not remove grease from the terminals or circuit board, follow local disposal rules, and know that replacement does not erase the programmed key.

How do I use remote start safely?

2016–2017

  1. If equipped, remote start starts the vehicle from outside and provides extended transmitter range.
  2. Do not use remote start indoors or in poorly ventilated areas, avoid using it with low fuel, and follow applicable local laws.
  3. Press the lock button, then press the remote start button twice, pressing each button within three seconds.
  4. Before driving, switch on the ignition for an integrated keyhead transmitter, or press the push-button ignition once while applying the brake for an intelligent access transmitter.
