1999–2026 Ford Ranger FAQ

What should I do if I lose my key or remote control?

2024–2026

Purchase a replacement key or remote control from an authorized dealer, who can program remote controls for your vehicle.

Page 77 in the 2026 manual →

2019–2023

If radio interference or a low transmitter battery prevents Intelligent Access unlocking, use the mechanical key blade to open the driver door.

What does the Malfunction Indicator Lamp mean?

2024–2026

When it illuminates while the engine is running, the on-board diagnostics system detects a malfunction in the vehicle emission control system.

Page 176 in the 2026 manual →

1999–2011

The light normally comes on when the ignition is switched on to check the bulb, then turns off after the engine is cranked if no malfunctions are present.

If it blinks eight times after 15 seconds, the vehicle is not ready for Inspection/Maintenance testing.

Page 12 in the 2011 manual →

What should I do if the Malfunction Indicator Lamp flashes?

2024–2026

A flashing lamp may indicate engine misfire; avoid heavy acceleration and deceleration, and have the vehicle checked as soon as possible because increased exhaust temperatures could damage the catalytic converter or other components.

Page 176 in the 2026 manual →

1999–2011

A solid light after starting means the OBD-II system detected a malfunction.

If it blinks, an engine misfire may damage the catalytic converter; drive moderately, avoid hard acceleration or deceleration, and contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible because excessive exhaust temperatures could cause a fire.

What does the distance-to-empty reading mean?

2024–2026

Distance to empty estimates how far you can travel on the fuel remaining, and driving patterns can make the value decrease, increase, or stay constant.

How do I check the brake fluid level?

2019–2023

Park on a level surface and compare the reservoir level with its MIN and MAX marks.

A level between the marks is acceptable; if it is below MIN or above MAX, have the vehicle checked as soon as possible.

How should I replace the spark plugs on my 2023 Ranger?

2019–2023

Have a dealer replace the spark plugs and replace them at the appropriate scheduled maintenance intervals.

Page 330 in the 2023 manual →

1999–2011

Have an authorized dealer replace the spark plugs using parts that meet Ford material and design specifications, such as Motorcraft /H23041 or equivalent parts.

Using incorrect spark plugs may void the customer warranty for resulting engine damage.

How do I use the front fog lamps?

2019–2023

Set the lighting control to parking lamps, headlamps, or autolamps, then press the lighting-control button to switch the front fog lamps on or off.

In autolamps mode, the low-beam headlamps must be on, and you should use the fog lamps only during reduced visibility.

Page 84 in the 2023 manual →

What do the daytime running lamps do?

2019–2023

Daytime running lamps turn on in daylight when the lighting control is set to any position except headlamps, but they do not activate the rear lamps.

Use the headlamps as appropriate in all low-visibility conditions because daytime running lamps may not provide adequate lighting and failure to do so may result in a crash.

Can I use transmission fluid additives or cleaners?

2019–2023

No; do not use supplemental transmission fluid additives, treatments, or cleaning agents because they may damage internal components.

Page 277 in the 2023 manual →

1999–2011

For an automatic transmission requiring MERCON V, use only MERCON V or approved dual-use fluid, and set the level within the dipstick's normal operating range because other fluid may damage the transmission.

How do I check the automatic transmission fluid?

2019–2023

Have an authorized dealer check and add fluid if needed, especially if shifting is slow, the transmission slips, or fluid leaks.

Page 277 in the 2023 manual →

1999–2011

With the vehicle on a level surface, fill the 5-speed manual transmission to the bottom of the filler hole; service refill capacity is 2.8 quarts (2.65L).

For engine coolant, make the first change at 6 years or 105,000 miles (168,000 km), then repeat every 3 years or 45,000 miles (72,000 km), whichever arrives first.

1999–2011

Each month, check the engine oil level, all interior and exterior lights, tire wear and proper pressure including the spare, and windshield washer fluid.

When should I replace the cabin air filter?

1999–2011

Inspect and replace the cabin air filter more frequently when driving in dusty or dirty conditions, because its life depends on exposure.

Page 296 in the 2011 manual →

What should I do when the engine coolant temperature warning light comes on?

1999–2011

When equipped, pull over as soon as possible, turn off the engine, and let it cool if the engine coolant temperature light appears.

Do not remove the coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot or running.
